
The clinical name for Reductil is” Sibutramine” which is also known as
“Hydrochloride Monohydrate”. It is categorized as a “neurotransmitter reuptake
inhibitor” and is used in cases where extreme weight loss is needed. It works by
blocking the nerve cells in the brain that reabsorb Serotonin, Norepinephrine
and Dopamine. Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that regulates hunger pains
and makes the stomach feel full. By prohibiting the reabsorb Serotonin the
stomach feels full longer which decreases the amount of food that is consumed.
This medication is by prescription only and is available in 10 mg tablets that
are taken once a day. It should only be prescribed to patients that are
considered “clinically” obese. In order to be considered obese the patient must
have a Body Mass Index of 30 or more. If there are other medical conditions that
are linked to obesity then a Body Mass Index of 27 is acceptable.

As with any medication, the amount of weight that can be lost
depends solely on the individual that is taking it. Clinical studies and
research have been done on Reductil and with the proper diet and exercise,
